Downtown Wakefield

Places to stop at along Sunday Lake Street include:
■ The WAKEFIELD HISTORICAL SOCIETY (906-224-1045) 306 Sunday Lake St., in a white frame house just north of downtown. Memorabilia from old Wakefield and the mining era. Usually it's open from early June into September from noon to 4.
■ WAKEFIELD NEWS and BESSEMER PICK & AXE (906-224-9561) 405 Sunday Lake St. The office is part weekly paper (and a lively one) and part commercial printer.
■ UPTOWN FOOD & DELI (906-224-7421) at 501 Sunday Lake St. The classic look of this storefront grocery has been preserved at this eat-in deli and crafts shop. Some long-time standby groceries for sale (canned goods, Kraft dinner) add to the ambiance. Mon-Fri 9-4, Sat 10-2.
■ ROGER RANDALL'S BAKERY (904-224-5401) at 505 Sunday Lake St. is widely known for pasties; jelly doughnuts; "the best glazed doughnuts in the world"; rolls filled with raspberries, blueberries, and more; and many kinds of bread. Some tables eating in. Roger Randall took over from his dad. Handicap access: 2 or so steps. Open Mon-Fri 8-5, Sat 8 to 4.
■ AGOGEEBIC PRESS (no phone) at 408 Sunday Lake St. Part museum, part publishing office of Bruce Cox. The show windows of this quaint storefront are fascinating in an evocative way. Only the computer is a modern anachronism. Bruce Cox writes and publishes books about historical topics of considerable local interest (Perfectly Safe: The Pabst Mining Disaster; a history of Wakefield; the tale of the vicious robber of the Gogebic stagecoach; and Oliver's Iron Men—the iron mining employees of the Rockefeller mines, including U. S. Steel's Elbert Gary, namesake of Gary, Indiana. Ted Albert and the 51st State of Superior is about the Lebanese-American behind the U.P. separatist movement. Cox also does historical and genealogical research. Reach him, and read his book list, by searching "gogebicbooks." He's often here, but by chance—no regular hours.
