Ontonagon River South Branch
The Ontonagon River South Branch from Ewen to Victoria Dam. Skill level II (basic). Excellent fishing for brook trout is a plus. In the Ottawa National Forest; many suitable riverside spots for camping. Easy paddling except for the challenging stretch before the Victoria Dam basin. That part is only for experienced whitewater paddlers. Water levels determined by UPPCO's need for power at its Victoria Dam hydropower plant. "The South Branch may be the least-known and least-often paddled of the major branches of the Ontonagon, yet we found it to be the most attractive and challenging," writes Jerry in Canoeing Michigan Rivers[Get Directions]
