TWIN LAKES
Region: Keweenaw Peninsula
|
| Neighboring villages Toivola and Twin Lakes share this little post office in Toivola. |
Twin Lakes is a dispersed resort community on and near M- 26, 13 miles north of M-38 near Mass City and 23 miles south of Houghton. It has a convenience store, an unexpected coffeehouse and coffee roaster, and the newish Parkview Lodge and Grill (906-288-3288) with 16 smoke-free rooms - all on U.S. 26.
Twin Lakes' mailing address is Toivola, 10 miles to the north on M-26, a former logging camp and stop on the Copper Range Railroad. In Finnish Toivola means city of hope. North of Toivola the Misery Bay Road leads to Agate Beach on Misery Bay, one of the Keweenaw's magical, tucked-away spots with agate beaches and a 25-site primitive campground. A bonfire is held there in honor of Juhannes, St. John's Day, a feast day near the summer solstice.
Using Twin Lakes as a base camp could give visitors a peaceful, private lakeside housekeeping cottage or camp site within an easy drive of many different destinations: the Adventure Mine and Old Victoria, the Porkies, the Seaman Mineralogical Museum in Houghton, even Copper Harbor for a long day's drive. Right in the neighborhood are the sporty, 9-hole Wyandotte Hills Golf Course and the remote agate beaches of Misery Bay on Lake Superior.
