Specialty foods

There is little in the way of gourmet food shops in the Upper Peninsula. But you can find shops that sell foods grown or gathered nearby, as well as shops that feature ethnic specialties that descend from the large migrations of Europeans who came here to work in the mines. These are not paid listings, but places we think are of special interest.
Thimbleberry stand
In the Keweenaw, roadside stands start popping up in July to sell two prized berries. First come strawberries, sweeter than those grown to the south. Later in July come the thimbleberries. Picked wild, they make exceptional jams—$12 a pint at this stand.
