South Range Lodgings
WILDLIFE REFUGE CABINS
(906) 482-1001. (888) 510-1001
These 6 charming log cottages, built in 2001, reflect owners David and Lori Sleeman's many ideas gleaned from snowmobile adventures out west. Lori calls the cabins "roughing it in style": rustic log furniture, quilts on beds and bunks, cable TV, WiFi internet, ample porches, gas grills, and fireplaces with stone chimneys, built by Lori, who learned masonry for this project. A shared gas-fired sauna makes for good steam on sauna rocks—much better than electric saunas. Lori's oil paintings, also for sale, have a delightful effect: from pine branches on switchplates to cabin wildlife murals to customers' snowmobile helmets. Three cabins ($150/day in winter/$110 otherwise) sleep 8 with one bath. Two are larger.
For years retirees Dave (a contractor) and Lori looked for land on a snowmobile trail within walking distance to restaurants and taverns, with space for groups to unwind without disturbing others. They found it here on South Range's Bill Nicholls Trail, 3 miles from Dave's hometown in Trimountain, 8 miles from Houghton, a stone's throw from the Cozy Corner bar.
