♦ WILDERNESS ADVENTURES AND SUPPLY (906-885-5676), an attractive and amazingly compact place, is part nature store and souvenir shop, part outfitters for last-minute camping and backpacking gear. The friendly, savvy owners and staffers have also worked at the state park's visitor center. 231 Lincoln/M-107. It's open from May 1 through fall color season. Extended hours in summer.
♦ GREAT LAKES TRADING COMPANY (906-885-5503) provides some of the Upper Peninsula's best browsing. It's in a charming Arts & Crafts cottage down toward the park. Here is an eclectic collection of old and new: pottery, antiques, jewelry, and folk art featuring local and regional artisans. Media include welded sculptures, weavings, carvings, Tiffany-style lamps, spun copper bowls, and handmade jewelry. Stop by for a cup of coffee and for pointers on area sights, waterfalls, and hikes from the longtime residents and outdoors enthusiasts who own and staff the shop. 301 Lincoln/M-107. Open Mem. Day thru color season daily 10-5. Handicap access: 2 + 1 steps.

♦ The SILVER IMAGE GALLERY (906-885-5972), the studio of the late nature photographer Dan Urbanski, a much-loved figure on the local scene, is probably on hiatus if Patty Urbanski is off on an adventure. Ask locally or call.
