Five Fingers Area
|
| Jennifer Braido |
The channels and ridges of the Five Fingers area at the island's northeastern tip are known for their rocky scenery. These unsheltered waters are exposed to bad weather coming off the expanse of Lake Superior to the northeast. You can enjoy the scenery from a larger vessel with an experienced captain by taking the Sandy's all-day North Side Cruise on Wednesday. It goes completely around the Five Fingers and west on the Amygdaloid Channel to McCargoe Cove, which extends several miles into the island's interior. On the cove passengers might take an optional hike, the steep, difficult, three-mile trek to Minong Mine, site of an ancient copper mine. A park ranger may give a talk there. Bring a lunch. The Sandy leaves Rock Harbor at 9 a.m. and returns at 5:30. Cost: $45, $22 for children 12 and under.
