Keystone Bridge & Bessemer Township Memorial Park

There's a pleasant little park with picnic area and beach along the Black River as it runs through the village of Ramsay. It's a short walk just a hundred yards north to an unusual and picturesque keystone bridge, illuminated at night. The Chicago & Northwestern Railway built the bridge in 1891 for its branch line from the iron mines to the railroad's main line across the U.P. The bridge, built of carefully cut limestone, was constructed without mortar and locked in place by the keystone at the top of the arch. This is a very pretty place, but don't expect too much in the way of maintenance.![]()
Ramsay can be reached from U.S. 2 by turning south east of Bessemer, at the intersection where the giant skier beckons north toward Big Powderhorn Resort. Or, for a scenic little backroads adventure, take Old U.S. 2 from Ayer Street in Ironwood. Park is on Old U.S. 2 on the river's west bank. Not handicap accessible.
