RAMSAY
Region: Ironwood & the Gogebic Range
|
| Only the post office is still open in downtown Ramsay. The barber shop, candy shop, and clothing store are long gone, and the theater across the street has been torn down. |
Originally a lumbering village founded in 1886, Ramsay (population about 400) was later redeveloped as a model company town by the Eureka-Asteroid Mining Company. In the words of Kathryn Eckert's Buildings of Michigan, the company built "white-painted, individualized houses" that were, for their time, unique in the area. Today Ramsay is mostly a retirement community. Its churches and school have closed. There remain a tavern, a post office, and the township hall. A quaint old corner restaurant on the main street had been reopened and spiffed up to good effect as Ore House Pub and Pizza, but now its owner has gone to other things.
