The Friday night all-you-can-eat fish fry at the Elks' Club is a local institution. It attracts from 140 to 225 people. Currently the whitefish dinner is $10 (it also comes broiled, and it's fresh from April into November). Pollack is $8.50. Potato and salad bar included.

Downtown at 109 Newberry Ave./M-123, across the street from Timber Charlie's. The fish fry starts at 5 and lasts until 8:30 or so.

Timber Charlie's Food 'n' spirits
(906) 293-3363
Timber Charlie's, a popular spot, is a full-service restaurant with a big menu ranging from steaks to Mexican, pasties, whitefish battered or broiled, burgers and sandwiches, meal-size salads like grilled chicken salad, and hand-cut steaks. There's breakfast, too. Many people feel it's the best food in town. Owner Ray Mahaffy has introduced a European section to the menu, with wienerschnitzel, gyros sandwiches, pasta, Northern Italian dishes that are not pasta, and more. Entrées start at $9 with vegetable and appropriate starch. Timber Charlie's has long been known for BBQ baby-back ribs ($14 and $19 at dinner). Soups (around $4 a crock, including a roll, crackers, a pickle) are a specialty: four a day, always French onion and a tasty, meaty vegetable beef soup. Knotty pine walls, a terrazzo floor, ruffled curtains and mounted animal heads give the place its old-timey character. There's an extensive gift shop, too, open when it's busy or upon request. There's a large side parking lot right next to a busy snowmobile trail.

110 Newberry Ave./M-123 at the north end of downtown, by the tracks. Open daily including Sunday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. or later. Handicap accessible. Full bar.

Pizza Place
(906) 293-5551
In addition to very good pizza, Pizza Place has a spiffy eat-in dining area and patio with a good hillcrest view. There's a jukebox, a pool table, and karaoke after 8 p.m. Standout specialty pizzas are roasted pepper and chicken with onions, bacon, and olives, and also Philly steak with white sauce. Dessert pizza has apples, cherries, etc. on a cinnamon crust. Non-pizza items include fettucine, spaghetti, chicken strips and subs. Delivery available.

7237 M-123 between downtown and M-28. Across from Indian Springs Shopping Center. Look for the penguin sign; sits up from road. Open daily 4-10, often to 11. Wheelchair-accessible. No alcohol.

Zellar's Village Inn
293-5114
Zellar's does everything from hearty breakfasts to Mexican and hot dogs to homemade pies, pizza, and buffets. Many local groups hold meetings here. Daily lunch specials are $5 to $6. An all-you-can-eat chicken buffet is Thursdays, all-you-can-eat fresh whitefish Fridays ($11).

7552 South Hwy. M-123 at the bottom of the hill from M-28. Open daily 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Handicap accessible. Full bar.
