Nelson Falls and Canyon—Nelson Creek (Gogebic County)

Nelson Falls
Wayne Premo

Nelson Falls and Canyon-Nelson Creek This is a beautiful hike, with a spectacular climax. This is a forty five minute walk that is not difficult. Take time to enjoy and explore this area. We have also seen this referred to as Nelson Canyon Falls.

Three miles west of Lake Gogebic on Highway 64, take the C Camp Road south; cross Nelson Creek (culverts) and continue for almost one mile until on the way uphill there is a two track (path).

Park and walk the two track in and as it peters out or turns right, walk angling left. You will soon be at the river; walk downstream.

Next there is a canyon area that will continue for a long way and then level out again. It is much easier to walk at the top of the canyon, but the walk at the bottom is beautiful. The river has small cataracts in the canyon. After the canyon has leveled off for awhile, you will hear the sound of the waterfall.

It is located at the head of another steep canyon. To photograph the waterfall, one must cross the river above the waterfall. Below the waterfall, the river drops rapidly the entire length of the canyon. Walk the north rim.

Ability to Locate:Fairly Difficult
Access by Hiking:Fairly Easy
Beauty of Falls:Outstanding
