Negaunee Lodgings
QUARTZ MOUNTAIN INN
(906) 475-7165
This modest older motel is definitely one of Michigan's most unusual. Behind the building is a prime rock-collecting area. Rooms include phones and cable TV with HBO. $52 for single, $65 for double summmer rates. $130 for a townhouse that sleeps 4 with 2 BR and complete kitchens. Rates lower in winter. The best part is the terrific breakfast served in the central common area by owners Jack and Nola McConaha—not just baked goods but fruit, sausage, waffles or pancakes, scrambled eggs, and homemade oatmeal, and Jack's perceptive, funny comments about life in the Upper Peninsula. (As a Traverse City native, he's got an outsider-insider's view.) Though clean and comfortable, the rooms are not fancy. All 26 units air-conditioned. The current owners aren't rock collectors, but some samples and books from the previous owners are still around. Simple picnic facilities with a grill are on the grounds, but highway traffic is annoying.
