Scenic drive Munising to Marquette

M-28 between Munising & Marquette
M-28 between Munising & Marquette.

Like US-2 to the south, M-28 creates a major UP east-west corridor. The 42-mile stretch between Munising and Marquette opens up miles of often-deserted public beaches served by small drive-in parks. Especially when Lake Superior kicks up big white waves on sunny days, the views while driving along here is marvelous. Headed west, drivers are also treated to the broad vista of the Marquette waterfront, from the big power plant to the south past to two huge ore docks to lovely Presque Isle Park to the north.

Au Train River mouth
Just north of M-28 the Au Train River lazily winds its way through sand to Lake Superior.

The lovely way rivers like the Au Train and Rock make their elegant right-turn twist through the sand before emptying into Superior is worth stopping to gaze at. At Au Train a public rest area overlooks the spectacle.
