Falls River, Upper, Lower & Middle Falls

Falls River—Middle Falls

Falls River—Middle Falls

These wonderful, complex waterfalls in a piney forest are not overrun with visitors, and they aren't impossibly difficult to reach, either - though the river tumbles down a sizable hill the entire way. They run between downtown L'Anse and U.S. 41 at Burger King. It's harder to find the way to the falls at the Burger King end.

The Lower Falls is rated "easy" by the local tourism office, the Middle Falls "easy/moderate." Once you get away from the humming ceiling tile plant and its fence, it's a wonderful experience: picturesque forest, shelves of slate and sandstone, and sometimes local kids fishing - an old-timey scene. The Penroses, authors of the highly recommended Guide to 199 Michigan Waterfalls, write, "If we had to recommend just one river to visit in all of Michigan, this would be it." For maps to the upper falls, get their book, or stop at the Baraga County Tourist & Recreation Association.

From U.S. 41 outside L'Anse, take Broad St. into town down the hill. At the blinker light on Main St., go left. Do not cross the river. Park by the river next to the BPB plant (formerly Celotex) in the lot connected with the waterfront park. The trail begins between the river and the plant's chain link fence and goes upstream. Wheelchair access: from parking area to first falls, maybe.

Above 41 is an even more splendid falls. Wayne Premo provides the following instructions for how to see this and the other falls along this stretch:

Near L'Anse, reach the river by taking the Power Dam Road to the Falls River, from US 41.

There is a trail on the east side of the river, and these directions start you from the Upper Falls (closer to the dam), to the Lower Falls (closer to Railroad Bridge).

From 1.5 miles above the bridge (Railroad Bridge) to .4 mile below the bridge, are probably the greatest number of waterfalls per distance in the state.
