| Nothing in front of the U.S. Forest Service office on U.S. 2 just east of Ironwood indicates that Ottawa National Forest supervisor's office has an attractive, substanttive book and gift shop as well as lots of useful free visitor information and an excellent large map for sale. |
Here visitors can get knowledgeable individualized planning information and lots of handouts on recreational opportunities throughout the Ottawa National Forest's million acres in the western U.P. Detailed maps of the Ottawa are for sale. There's also a little nature book and gift store with T shirts, hats, stuffed Smokey the Bear and other animals, etc. There are also specialized nature guides and instructional books (edible flowers, bow-hunting, constellations) and books about national forests. The children's books are quite appealing. The non-profit Ottawa Interpretive Association runs the shop. Funds raised pay for informational kiosks, visitor brochures, and other Ottawa visitor improvements.

3,500 bolts of fabric make this a paradise for quilters, from beginners to experts. It has an eclectic selection of fabrics for many tastes including traditional; bright and contemporary; northwoods; Civil War, 1930s and 1950s reproductions; and two walls of hand-dyed Indonesian batiks. The shop's roomy home is a four-square doctor's house/office from 1898. There's space for displays of vivid quilts, hangings, and quilted accessories made by 10 or so area quilters.
