The AmericInn format in this 48-room motel is extremely comfortable: a big lobby with cushy sofas and chairs, a fireplace, and a breakfast area with microwave and teas. There's a meeting room, too. Complimentary breakfast includes a do-it-yourself waffle-maker and scrambled eggs with sausage. The attractive swimming pool room has a vaulted ceiling, a whirlpool and adjacent sauna and exercise room. Wi-fi internet. Don & GG's, the area's best restaurant, is across the highway; a laundromat and family restaurant are next door. There's a snowmobile trail in rear. Rates change with season, weekday/weekend, and occupancy. For instance, a $69 room for two in fall and spring costs $89 in summer, up to $159 on some special occasions. Ask about 2-room suites and whirlpool suites.

The 25 comfy, pleasant, clean rooms in this simple single-story motel have minifridges, phones, HBO, and Wi-Fi internet. There's a free continental breakfast. Coffee and microwave available in lobby. New sauna. Several restaurants, movies are within walking distance. Winter rates for 2: $49 (1 bed), $59 (2 beds) Higher on weekends. Other seasons: around $43 and $46. Rates for one person as low as $37. Three rental houses are adjacent. Owner Morgan Grasso can advise about cross-country skiing, Hurley-area fishing. Ski packages for all 4 downhill and 4 cross-country ski areas.

This well-run, 25-unit motel enjoys a good location. Right next door is the excellent Don & GG's, now serving breakfast some days. A laundromat and the Breakwater Cafe are across the highway. Guests are welcome to use the microwave in the office, where coffee is available. A big continental breakfast is provided in busy winter months. (Inquire.) Mini-fridges upon request in most rooms. Wi-fi internet, phones in all rooms. The hot tub room is extremely pleasant. Next to it is an authentic Finnish sauna with stones, gas-fired and cedar-lined. Neighborhood streets for walking are just around the corner. Owners Bob and Annette Burchell are knowledgeable about area skiing and other recreation. They are gradually refurbishing their 1965 motel to play up its vintage character. Most rooms have two double beds. Rates for two are generally $58. On winter weekends they're $68, except for Chrismas week ($88). $5/extra person.

This 61-room, two-floor motel with interior halls has a pleasant, medium-size indoor pool and whirlpool. A free deluxe continental breakfast (cereal, waffles, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, etc.) is put out in the breakfast/gathering room, along with coffee and tea any time. Rates, corporately controlled, vary widely with season, weekend, special events, etc. For 2 adults rates range from $116 (a little lower in summer) to $260. Call for rates. Rooms have flat-screen TV and WiFi. Guest computer and printer available. Ask about the 2-room executive suite which sleeps 8, and the 10 one-room suites, each with a whirlpool tub, microwave, refrigerator, and recliner. Walk to restaurants. Quiet neighborhoods nearby for walkers and joggers.

The 12 rooms of this charming single-story motel are decorated bed-and-breakfast style, with wallpaper and floral comforters. Arrangements vary; some have sitting areas, some king beds. All have microwaves, minifridges, Wi-fi internet. Continental breakfast. Sauna available. Rates for two are $46 and up. This large parcel of land permits a sitting area and flower garden in front, which English co-owner Valerie Di Giorgio plants in as English a style as the weather and snow banks permit. Walkers and joggers can use neighborhood streets in rear.

3,500 bolts of fabric make this a paradise for quilters, from beginners to experts. It has an eclectic selection of fabrics for many tastes including traditional; bright and contemporary; northwoods; Civil War, 1930s and 1950s reproductions; and two walls of hand-dyed Indonesian batiks. The shop's roomy home is a four-square doctor's house/office from 1898. There's space for displays of vivid quilts, hangings, and quilted accessories made by 10 or so area quilters.
