TAHQUAMENON HOTEL
(906) 876-2388
Joan DeWitt, owner with her husband Grant, says the food she serves at breakfast and dinner is "very basic." Snowmobile season is its busy time. Dinner brings pork chops, roast beef, perch, cod, burgers, and pasties ($7) on the low side, and a 12 oz. New York strip steak ($19) at the top of the menu. The building probably goes back to the 1920s or 1930s, she says, but it has been modernized. Décor has been refreshed. Deer antlers, fishing poles, etc. give it a lodge look. Grant, who grew up in Hulbert, has assembled a collection of local history books for sale.
SNO-SHU INN
(906) 876-2324
Six cabins with wood stoves; an apartment; and an "inn" unit with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths are on wooded, grassy grounds at one of the major intersections in the village of Hulbert. All have TVs, with only with three local channels—except for the inn, which has satellite. Some have cooking facilities; all have microwaves and coffeepots. The resort is very well maintained. There's a phone in the office, a picnic area with grills, and a pavilion with stone fireplace. Hiking and snowmobile trails on public land are across the road. Snowmobile and ATV rentals are on site. Guests can have access to Hulbert Lake, rent fishing boats and kayaks, and use the hiking path and beach at the owners' Hulbert Lake Lodge two miles away (see below). Cabins start at $85/night.
HANDSHAKE MOTEL & RV PARK
(906) 876-2378
This quaint 4-unit motel, in the side yard of a picturesque old farmhouse, has some kitchen units and a central location. It could make a good base for touring vacationers. Co-owner Tom Weaver is a local constable; his wife, Roni Israel-Weaver, works in a sunny room next to the farm garage doing custom quilting on quilts others have pieced. Big old maple and apple trees and adjacent natural areas make for a beautiful setting. Paths and a snowmobile trail on the other side of the road go into the woods for miles. (Much of this land is public land.) The 4 pleasantly decorated motel units have knotty pine walls, a mix of older furniture, and TVs with 5 or 6 channels. There are 4 cabins. Summer rates: $45 for one double bed ($50 in winter), $65 for two rooms with a connecting bath (sleeps 4). The $100 and $125 units, sleeping 6 and 8, have kitchenettes. One cabin has 4 double beds and a fully equipped kitchen ($125 in summer and $145 in winter). The RV park in back, hardly visible from the motel in front, is $20/night for full hookups, without showers or restrooms.
HULBERT LAKE LODGE
(906) 876-2324
A quiet location on private, 3-mile-long Hulbert Lake make this well-kept vintage resort a favorite summer getaway for many return visitors. "Fishing [for lake trout, pike, smallmouth bass, and panfish] can be fantastic," says one regular who comes 3 times a year. "Birding is fabulous, with eagles, osprey, and loons. And the staff are wonderful folks." The Hulbert Lake Club owns a thousand acres around the lake. Motors are restricted to 10 hp. Swimming and sailboats are encouraged. Hunting is excellent. Boat rental: $40 (for a boat with no motor) to $75/day. Canoes and kayaks rented too. Hiking trails are in the nearby woods. Five cabins are in a woodsy setting on the lake. All have coffeemakers, microwaves, a picnic table and charcoal grill outside. No TVs—the lodge is nature-oriented! A phone, fireplace, and coffee are in the lodge. Cabins sleep 2 to 7. Reserve early for summer! Cabins start at $95/night; 3-bedroom cabin is $175.
