Hessel Restaurants

Hessel Bay Inn
(906) 484-2460
"Everything is good," at this popular restaurant, says a serious food-lover. It's known for outstanding whitefish, but its season is now short. Chef/owner James Romanuk caters to locals and the many affluent summer people. So his menu is diverse and not expensive. There's everything from scrambled eggs and outstanding omelets ($6.50 to $8.30) and eggs Benedict at breakfast to excellent whitefish at lunch ($9) and dinner ($15, or $18 all you can eat) and dinner entrées like New York strip steak ($20) and shrimp scampi. A trained chef, Romanuk makes all his salads and soups ($4/bowl, $7 on the all-you-can-eat soup and salad bar) from scratch.
The Inn sits up a ways from the harbor, with a fine view of harbor and islands from inside or the front deck. Children's menu.

I86 S. Pickford in downtown Hessel. From M-134 in Hessel, turn south at the blinker light. Restaurant is on right by harbor. Open from May thru Sept. From Mem. Day thru Labor Day open daily 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., to 10 Sat. Otherwise closed Mon-Wed. Call to confirm non-summer hours. Full bar.

Hessel Grocery & Deli
(906) 484-2435
This trim wood grocery by the harbor is again the heart of the village. Owner Bonnie Mickelson has made all the basics look fresh, retro, and neat as a pin—groceries, ice cream cones in 8 flavors, beer, wine, beer, and liquor, sundries. There's even a gas pump. Specialty coffees and espresso (in beans or brewed) are from a specialty roaster in Bonnie's former home, Washington State. Excellent pizza, subs. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes may be from Bonnie's book Hollyhocks and Radishes, based here in Hessel. There are burgers, pasties, and, in the off season, daily specials, including Friday whitefish. Local people rave. Many items come with sweet potato fries. Lots of fresh ingredients at this 25-seat deli. Box lunches.

197 S. Pickford Ave. across from marina. (906) 484-2435. Open daily year-round. Mem. thru Labor Day 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Otherwise 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dog hitching post.
