Fourteen large, shady modern campsites (showers, flush toilets, 30 and 50 amp electric) for RVs and tents are near or on the Manistique River in a pretty, grassy spot. Rates from $20 (rustic) to $32 (RV with water, electricity, cable TV). Even more popular are four overnight cabins: bedding, electricity, heat, bathhouse accommodations, and, in three, cable TV). They rent for $65/night ($85 for the one with a bathroom) and sleep four. All have coffeemaker, microwaves. Reserve these well in advance. Owners Tom and Sally Kenney rent canoes, kayaks, and mountain bikes, and in winter snowshoes and cross-country skis. They are an Old Town canoe dealer. They have an extensive camp store and gift shop.

8174 Highway M-77 (entrance on east side of road) on the north edge of Germfask, 1 1/2 miles south of the Refuge entrance. Open May thru Oct. Gifts, rentals year-round. Wheelchair access: bathhouse is accessible. Sites are grassy but not hardened. Dogs welcome. $5/day/dog in cabins.

BIG CEDAR CAMPGROUND

On the large site of CCC Camp 3626 on the Manistique River. Fishing enthusiasts Barry and Tanya Peters' 10-acre private campground has 53 sites, many wooded, some open but near the trees. All have water, 20 and 30 amp electricity, and a modern bathhouse. $22 or so/night with water and electric, $18 for tents, $26 for full hookups. Rates assume 2 adults, 2 children 12 and under. $3/extra person. A number of sites are big-rig friendly. There's little shrubby buffer between sites. Canoes and kayaks can be rented here. There's a laundry and small store, plus horseshoes, a playground, volleyball, badminton, and short trails along the river.

7936 M-77 just south of Germfask, opposite the entrance to Northern Hardwoods Ski Area. Open from May thru mid Oct. Handicap accessible: call. Dogs on leash.

MEAD CREEK CAMPGROUND/LAKE SUPERIOR STATE FOREST

At this state forest campground, 8 rustic campsites (no showers or flush toilets; water pump) are where Mead Creek joins the Manistique River at the south end of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Expect shady sites with good privacy from neighbors.

From M-77 2 miles south of Germfask and 7 miles north of Blaney Park, turn west onto H-42/CR 436/Manistique River Rd. Campground is in 5 miles. $15/night. Handicap access: call.
