GENE'S POND CAMPGROUND/COPPER COUNTRY STATE FOREST
(906) 875-6622
See Gene's Pond point of interest for details about this isolated wetland area known for its water birds and fishing. The 14-space rustic campground ($6/$9 night; vault toilets, no showers or electricity) has the sensitive design and big sites characteristic of most state forest campgrounds. There's a boat launch. A relatively easy 2.3-mile hiking trail leads from the campgrounds to overlooks and an old mine site.

From Felch (over 25 miles north of U.S. 2) go west 1/2 mile on M-69 to CR 581. In about 6 miles, turn west on Leeman Rd./CR 422, follow signs to Gene's Pond. (906) 875-6622. $10/night. Handicap accessible: no. Dogs permitted on six-foot leash.
