HOG ISLAND POINT CAMPGROUND/Lake Superior State Forest
(906) 477-6048 (field office). No reservations. www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/ no reservations
This shady, spacious state forest
campground with a sandy Lake Michigan beach, just two blocks south of U.S. 2, has a separate picnic area with vault toilets. Of its 50 sites, many are on the water. Hog Island is one of the most popular state forest campgrounds. It's used mostly for overnights, not extended stays. So turnover is high and you can usually find a spot. Highway noise can be audible, but the sound of waves sometimes blocks it out. All sites and restrooms are ADA wheelchair-accessible.
Garnet Lake State Forest Campground
Pleasant and remote yet not a long way from the Mackinaw Bridge. 10 wooded sites managed with Hudson Township. Suitable for tents or small trailers. Fishermen go for perch and northern pike. Vault toilets, hand water pump.
