BEARY PATCH
(906) 477-6214
Just west of Engadine on U.S., this is a cozy pit stop for breakfast and lunch, with a bear theme. "The food is always good, it's clean, the service is fast, and it's priced for the workingman's budget," says a patron who can afford to eat anywhere. Breakfasts are a big attraction, especially and the special, around $6: two eggs, meat, American fries or hash browns, homemade strawberry jam and toast, and coffee. Owner-cook Ethel Toms, a San Franciscan retired here in 1994 because her mother was from Naubinway. She herself always wanted to come back. She cooks the basics—homemade soup, good burgers, Reubens—and dreams up dishes like chicken Santa Fe sandwich with grilled onion, peppers and chipotle on grilled sourdough bread, and stuffed French toast with strawberries and whipped cream (local teens come by especially for that). Oatmeal and meal-size salads like the $7 chicken Caesar salad are heart-smart options. On snowmobile trail.
MARY'S GARDEN CAFE & BAKERY
(906) 477-1110
For her sandwiches and salads at this charming small-town café, Amy Duberville tries to get as much local as possible: beef and buffalo meat, vegetables and fruits in seasons. The bakery makes cookies, cinnamon rolls, and breads used in sandwiches. That's the menu, along with hearty soups like the flavorful beef-barley. A wide variety of local people appreciate the surprising fare and farmy atmosphere. There may be music some lunchtimes. No credit cards.
