SANDTOWN FARMHOUSE BED & BREAKFAST
(906) 477-6163
This comfortable, unpretentious 1920 farmhouse, 12 miles east of Curtis and 6 miles north of Engadine, is the setting for an unusual B&B. Caroll Harper cooks guests' full breakfasts on the cast iron kitchen range, and bakes there and at her wood-fired oven. She also tends a big garden and weaves rag rugs on her grandmother's loom, using wool from her colorful Shetland sheep. A mixed flock of chickens lays eggs for meals.
Caroll grew up in Engadine. She and her husband, Tom, were thrilled to retire early and buy this 80-acre farm. The property goes back to a woods, where Tom keeps some three miles of trails mown for walking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Hunting is allowed. Snowmobile access is good. The large front porch wraps around to a deck, a great place to unwind on a starry night. All 3 antique-filled guest rooms have private bathrooms and individual heat control. They are $80/night on the ground floor and $90 for each of two upstairs rooms, one with a panoramic view and king bed, the other a suite. Satellite TVs are in the parlor and kitchen. Guests are welcome to bring picnic fare and eat in the dining room. Better to reserve two months ahead for summer weekends. Tom hand-forges knives ($100 and up). Guests often wander into the shop to watch him work. Evenings Carrol can often be found at her spinning wheel, where women guests like to gather.

On Sandtown Rd. just west of M-117, 7 miles north of U.S. 2 at Engadine. Handicap access: call. Family-friendly. Pets: call.
