ECKERMAN
Region: Tahquamenon & Seney, Grand Marais & Whitefish Point
|
| In keeping with the best hang loose U.P. tradition, the Bear Butt closed in March, 2011, its owners sitting tight until the economy picks up. |
Eckerman, a mile north from M-28 on the way to Paradise, began as a station on the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad in 1889, the year it got its post office. Unlike many other logging villages, Eckerman is lucky to still be a dot on the state highway map, with a post office and a small collection of houses. The Bear Butt Inn restaurant is what really puts Eckerman on the map for lots of vacationing downstaters.
