WHITEFISH LODGE
(906) 343-6762; members.aol.com/whitefishl
This large lodge with 3 housekeeping units, all with grills, is built into a hillside overlooking the Laughing Whitefish River. It enjoys a pleasant woodland setting close to Lake Superior, midway between Pictured Rocks and Marquette. In the 3-bedroom upstairs unit (sleeps up to 8, 3 baths), the large kitchen/great room and deck are big enough for family reunions. It rents for $750/week in summer, $850/week in winter, or $145/day.
Downstairs, 2 two-bedroom units (with 4 queen beds altogether) have smaller sitting-dining areas and covered porches. The back bedrooms have no windows. TV/VCRs with 3 channels. A pay phone is in the office (always open). 2-night minimum year-round. $60/night, $350/week.
Owners Karen and Steve Pawielski live next door. They have made a picnic area and bonfire pit down by the river. Steve, from Munising, met Karen working at a corporate travel agency in Atlanta. "We came up to visit, sat out here on a beautiful day, and thought of what we could make of this," says Karen.
The property has 2,000 feet of river frontage. It's surrounded by forestland open to the public, laced with old logging roads that are excellent for mountain biking and hunting. Sandhill cranes nest near the river, in the 1,700-acre Laughing Whitefish Preserve. It is also near Laughing Whitefish Falls, Eben's ice caves, and the Bay de Noc-Au Train equestrian trail. Horses welcome. Call early for good availability, especially in winter. On snowmobile trail #417.

N 8285 Peter White Rd. south of Deerton. Follow directions to Laughing Whitefish Preserve. Open year-round. Wheelchair access: call. Extra people: $5/night, $25/week in summer, $50/week in winter. No pets.
