Pine Stump Junction
(906) 658-3364
At this historic intersection, former builder Larry White and his daughter Jenna have transformed an old tavern with gas station into a friendly place for all ages. (There's plenty of beer, also root beer for kids.) They played up the northwoods theme with spectacular local red pine logs that glow in the light. They are used in interior paneling, beams, and a long slab table, perfect for groups. Nothing on the menu has been frozen: build-your-own pizza, cheeseburgers with fresh-ground beef ($5.75, or $7 with hand-cut fries), chicken noodle soup, chili in winter, and pie ($3 a slice). In such a remote area, the revived restaurant is most welcome. Jenna's gift shop features Pine Stump hats and locally made things. Gas is still pumped here.
At "Pine Stump Junction," according to Michigan place names historian Walter Romig, one long road used by loggers connected Grand Marais to somewhere near today's Paradise. Another connected Newberry with today's Deer Park. Many logging camps were along the way. A big mailbox was attached to a huge pine stump. Mail from Newberry was deposited there, to be picked up by men from the lumber camps.

23583 CR 407 at CR 412 (the road to the Two Hearted Mouth). 18 miles north of Newberry, 7 miles south of Lake Superior. "Yooper year-round hours": closed the first two weeks of December and first two weeks of April. Summer and winter open daily 11-10. In spring and fall, closed Tues. Full bar.
