Fisher's Fine Food
(906) 297-2801
"Since 1945" says it all. Fisher's is a good kind of old-fashioned. It turns out delectable pies ($3/slice) and homemade soups, roasting 8 to 10 turkeys for the $10 Sunday turkey dinner. Scenic landscapes and knotty pine give the dining room a somewhere-in-time aura. The prices are retro, too: sandwiches under $5, whitefish dinner for $11, breakfasts with 2 eggs, meat, and toast for $4.50.

North Ontario, downtown DeTour. Closed Mon. Open Tues-Thurs 9-4, Fri-Sun 9-7. Closed 2 weeks around Easter. No credit cards. Out-of-town checks OK.

Mainsail Restaurant & Saloon
(906) 297-2141
Boaters stopping at DeTour favor the Mainsail because it's an easy walk from the public docks and it has a lounge and full bar in addition to an extensive menu and consistent food. Hang around the lounge to hear what's been caught in the St. Mary's River. Customer favorites include whitefish (of course!), currently still $7 as a sandwich, $14 at dinner; ribs; and a huge burrito ($10 with meat, $9 without). There's a French dip sandwich ($8). The ¼ lb. burger is $5.75 with fries. Lunch menu at the bar any time.

On Ontario 2 blocks north of the main four-corners. Usually open year-round. Mid June to Labor Day open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Otherwise closed Wed. Dining room open 9 to 9. Full bar.

The Albany Bar & Restaurant
(906) 297-8321
This vintage period place, hardly changed since the 1950s. Once dancing was part of its attraction; now it's the fresh fish dinners ($9 with potato, soup, juice, and salad). It's a place, the owner says, "where you know everybody who walks in the door." More than a few summer people fantasize about buying it and bringing back dancing.

13139 East M-134 just west of DeTour, north side of road. Hours 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. except Jan thru March noon-8. Full bar.
