DeTour beach, picnic and cross-country ski area
The former De Tour State Park, now part of Lake Superior State Forest, is a real find for picnickers, swimmers, and campers who don't require a lot of conveniences. Out of sight of the highway, towards St. Vital Point, are a nice, sandy beach backed by a mature coniferous forest. There are a few picnic tables, a hand pump, vault toilets, and 21 large, private campsites. An ungroomed cross-country ski loop, 3.3 miles, goes through the mature pines.On M-134, 6 miles west of DeTour and 3 1/2 miles east of M-48. (906) 293-5131. $10 camping fee. Self-registration.
