CHRISTMAS MOTEL
(906) 387-7100
Beth Willis and her husband have completely remodeled and winterized their quaint roadside motel half a mile west of the casino. It has six regular rooms ($55)—three with a queen, three with two doubles—and two two-room suites. See website photos. There's in-room coffee, basic cable, and mini-fridges upon request. Microwave in office. The back yard has picnic tables and grills, horseshoes, volleyball, badminton, and a bonfire pit. Make reservations well in advance for June into Sept. and for snowmobile season, Dec. thru March.

E7621 West M-28. Open year-round. Handicap access: call. Not for wheelchairs. 2 pet rooms.

YULE LOG RESORT
(906) 387-3184 or (906) 387-5940
This vintage resort from 1957 is neat as a pin. A row of 7 small, pleasantly furnished knotty-pine housekeeping cabins leads down to Lake Superior, where two larger premium cabins with picture windows, fireplaces, and two bedrooms each look out on the lake and Grand Island. They are $95/day, rented by the week in July and August, like most cabins. Reserve well ahead! Often they're booked up a year ahead. Other cabins (mostly $69) vary in size and bed configuration. All have cable TV, WiFi internet, and a mix of well-maintained older furniture. Two small cabins ($47) have minifridges but no kitchens. No air-conditioning. It's cool, sometimes windy on the lake. Bring jacket.
There are picnic tables and a playground by the water. Most years there's a sand beach with some rocks; it all depends. The low horizon looking north across Lake Superior is ideal for getting a good look at the northern lights if they are out. A charming rock garden with gnomes disguises the septic field. It's the legacy of Lois and Bob Gatiss, parents of Richard Gatiss, current owner with his wife, Terry. Foggy's Restaurant and the Christmas casino are within walking distance. There are very few places right on Lake Superior, and at such reasonable rates.

M-28 in Christmas, across from Santa's Workshop. Open early May thru Oct. Call by Jan. or earlier, especially for larger cabins. Children: no extra charge. No pets. Handicap access: small bathrooms, at least one step in front.
