CHANNING

Region: Iron River, Iron Mountain & the Menominee Range

An odd sight: so many railroad sidings in such an isolated area. It's a junction of the old lumber and iron ore carrier, Escanaba & Lake Superior RR, still in service today.

This unincorporated village of about 500 was founded in the late 19th century because it was the junction of two railroad lines, one from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Republic, the other from Escanaba to Ontonagon. The old depot here was the dispatching office for the once-busy line that initially took huge quantities of logs to sawmills in Wells, just north of Escanaba. When the economy is down, as it was in 2008-2010, you can see one effect here: railroads rent space on the many tracks here for their surplus boxcars.
