Michigan Limestone Operations Cedarville Plant
|
| Huge amounts of limestone leave this port by freighter every week. |
Freighters take on loads of limestone at Port Dolomite in McKay Bay, on the eastern edge of Les Cheneaux. It's owned by the Belgian-based conglomerate Carmeuse Group, which is North America's biggest limestone supplier. The chunks of limestone are heated to over 1650° F. to create Quicklime, used to make steel, paper, and to treat water.
Outsiders can't come in the compound, but it's easy to pull off M-134 and watch. To track vessel movements to see if one is likely to be here when you visit, call: (906) 484-2201, Extension 1.![]()
