CAMPING ALONG GREEN BAY

Arranged from north to south.

FULLER PARK
(906) 786-1020. Reservable: (906) 786-1020
The plus, very popular 25-site modern campground on 82 acres at this unstaffed Delta County park enjoys a quiet setting with spacious, shady lakeview sites, half a mile from the highway. It's near a small, sandy Green Bay beach and small boat launch on the Bark River. Other attractions are Bark River fishing access, and a 1-mile nature trail along the river and lake. See deltacountymi.org/parks for details. Fuller Park is extremely popular on summer weekends, but campsites have been available most weeks through Thursday, and it's usually enough to reserve a week ahead for to get a weekend site. .

On M-35 at the west side of the Bark River mouth, just inside Delta County. About 18 miles south of the U.S. 2/M-35 intersection in Escanaba and 16 miles north of Cedar River. $22 or $24 (waterfront) a night. Wheelchair accessibility: ADA accessible sites, restroom, showers, picnic site. Open from Mem. Day thru mid Sept. Fuller Park Website.

CEDAR RIVER STATE FOREST CAMPGROUND
(906) 786-2354.
18 well-spaced rustic campsites (vault toilets, no showers) are either on the Cedar River, a trout stream, or across a drive from it. The Cedar River Pathway, 8 miles of loops along and near the river, starts here. The Green Bay beach at Wells State Park is only about 8 miles away. This is a good bet for people who like a quiet, rustic camping atmosphere—no complaints about party campers.

8 miles northwest of Cedar River on CR 551/River Road, which joins M-35 just north of the village of Cedar River. Self-registration, no reservations. $15/night. Handicap-access: with assistance for wheelchairs. One accessible site.

FOX PARK
(906) 863-4721. Reservable by phone or at clynch@alphacomm.net
The 20-space campground, part of the Cedarville Township park, is rustic (no showers or electricity). Water available. Fire pits and tables. Half the widely-spaced sites are on Green Bay. Mature pines and oaks make a high canopy for shade, but there's little vegetation buffer between the large sites. See also Fox Park page.

N 10166 M-35 28 miles south of Escanaba, 7 miles north of Cedar River, and 25 miles north of Menominee. Open May 1 thru Oct. $12/night. Wheelchair access: no. Dogs on leashed.

WELLS STATE PARK
(906) 863-9747. In Central Time Zone. Reservations: (800) 44-PARKS; michigan.gov/wells
This popular 678-acre state park includes 150 close-spaced modern campsites on a single long loop, in a grassy, semi-open area right on Green Bay. There's some shrubby privacy landscaping for many sites. For details see Wells State Park as a point of interest.
The 22 most-requested sites are directly on the bay. Tall phragmites grasses now block access to the water in many places, but there's still a view and a usable beach. Rates are $21/night for 50 amp sites, otherwise $19 (for 30 amp) and $16 (off season with no toilet building). 80% of sites are reservable. Early reservations suggested for holiday weekends, all July weekends.
In a completely separate area, each of 5 attractive rustic cabins ($50; reserve well ahead) has a propane cooking range and heater, outhouse, access to a hand pump, double beds or bunks, tables and chairs for 8 to 12. The setting overlooking the shore is grand, and trails are close at hand. The historic park manager residence, built by the CCC in the 1930s, is now rented as a modern lodge, for $150/night weekdays, $170 weekends. It sleeps up to 12 and has electricity, showers, toilets, water, dishes, furnishings and linens. Reserve it by calling the park directly at (906) 863-9747.

On M-35, 1 mile south of Cedar River, 30 miles south of Escanaba, and 23 miles north of Menominee. In Central Time Zone. Camping usually open from April 22 thru Oct. 31. Showers on from 2nd week in May through Oct. Recreation passport required. $10/year for Michigan residents. Or $8/day, $29/year for nonresidents. Wheelchair access: all modern toilet facilities, playground, and 8 sites (reserve ahead) are ADA accessible.

KLEINKE COUNTY PARK
(906) 753-4582. Reservations only for stays of 1 month & up.
Trees provide some screening from M-35, which isn't far away from the sandy Green Bay beach and the popular modern campground at this Menominee County park. All 34 campsites still have water views, despite the phragmites that has just about covered the west shore of Green Bay. Half are on the water, and half on the other side of the campground drive. There's a playground and a picnic pavilion, often used for family reunions. All sites have 50 amp electricity. The campground has flush toilets, pay showers, and a dump station. A campground host might be on the scene. A ranger is in and out all summer long. All sites are shaded. There's little privacy between sites. Small boats can be carried down and launched on the beach despite the low water. Some sites are usually available. Call (906) 753-4582 to check.

On M-35 15 miles north of Menominee and about 8 miles south of Cedar River. $19 with electricity, $14 without. Open from May into Nov., weather depending. Water shut off on Oct. 31. Wheelchair access: yes, but beach access is sand.
