Lake Michigan beach from Pointe aux Chenes to Brevort

Lake Michigan beach near Brevort

U.S. 2 passes right along eight miles of beautiful, sandy, wide beach just east of Brevort. There's room to park on the wide shoulder, but only on the south side of U.S. 2. Because this highway is so busy and so dangerous, it's wisest for westbound motorists to find a place to turn and loop back to park.

In warm weather, hundreds of people stop and swim here. Restrooms and picnic tables are at the Hiawatha National Forest's Lake Michigan Picnic Area, next to its campground. ($5/car day use fee.)

Low dunes are north of the highway. Low, wet spots between the dunes from the highway to Brevoort Lake are good places to find blueberries, typically in late July through mid-August.

Dunes like these are stabilized by a succession of plants that follow the principal pioneer, American beach grass. Its long, deep roots grow down to find moisture in the sand, and the grass blades can withstand being buried by sand. Once the dunes are stabilized, juniper, oak, and pine will follow. Eventually enough soil will be formed to support a forest like that on the old dunes on the south shore of nearby Brevoort Lake.
-
Along U.S. 2 between H-57/Brevoort Lake Rd. and Ozark Rd. in Brevort. No parking on north sidee of U.S. 2.
