LA PANETTERIA
(906) 667-0188
This once-decrepit storefront in downtown Bessemer has been transformed into La Panetteria—"PA-nuh-tuh-REE-uh." That's "the bakery" in Italian. It's a big, sunny space, rather elegant in a casual Italian way, with many tables in front. It's busy at breakfast for coffee with sweet rolls, croissants, and bagels. It has also become a restaurant, with a full menu and a liquor license. The original owner/renovators, Jack and Jean Rigoni, have sold La Panetteria to Jesse Jackson and his wife, Randy. The Jacksons bake most of the same cookies and breads, including sugar cookies, cannoli, and sourdough bread made the slow way. Lunch brings soups, beautifully presented salads, and sandwiches ($7-$7.50—Cuban paninis and turkey/cheddar/bacon melt are favorites). For dinner there's pizza and entrées like gnocchi, seafood pasta, and spaghetti and meatballs.
