Bergland and Lake Gogebic Lodgings
BEAR'S NINE PINES RESORT
(906) 842-3361
Families are the summertime focus at this 9-cabin fishing resort on the west shore of Lake Gogebic. It packs a lot into a relatively small space. There are a gazebo full of toys, swing sets, basketball, tetherball, a bonfire pit, and a small beach with a swimming dock. Four docks mean there's room for guests' boats, and for various rentals. Water skis, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, and ice fishing equipment can be rented, too. Free paddleboat. Barry "Bear" Drews has been a Lake Gogebic fishing guide since 1985. He's happy to advise guests at no charge. He also guides for bear, deer, and grouse hunting. Bait shop, fish- and game-cleaning house, heated snowmobile workshop. DNR licenses available on-site. Four of 9 cabins (pictured on website) have lake views. All have satellite TV. WiFi in office reaches most cabins. Daily rentals only from Dec. 15 to May 1. Otherwise Sat-Sat weekly rentals preferred; daily rates may be possible. Most cabins are 2 BR sleeping 6-7 with pullout bed. Typically they rent from $550/week for 2, $75/extra person, or $105/day, $25/extra person. Two 1,100 square foot cabins with air-conditioning, 6-person hot tubs rent for $1,100/week for four people, $85/extra person, or $225/day, $40/extra person. No charge for children 4 and under.
MAPLE RIDGE MOTEL & BAIT SHOP
(906) 575-3545
This vintage motel, set back a bit from M-28 and not on the lake, has 6 cheerful air-conditioned rooms, each with 2 double beds and a roll-away. They are convenient little cocooning spots, each with cable TV, WiFi, a DVD player, coffeemaker, and mini-fridge. All guests can use the shared kitchenette/lounge and make dinner or use the microwave. A stream, pond, and nature trail are in the back yard, with perhaps a campsite to come. Rooms are roughly $42 for one, $66 for 2, $84 for 4, tax included. Right next door, proprietors Gus and Nettie Pietila (she's a self-described clean freak) operate an interesting bait shop. Gus hand-paints jigs there when he's not fishing or guiding for bear, walleye, and famous jumbo perch. Gus and Nettie are licensed taxidermists; the bait shop walls are covered with her fish. But often "we sell them as fast as we can make them," says Nettie. Fishing advice is readily available. Cash, senior, and veterans' discounts.
