Assinins Baraga Center/Father Baraga's school

Four parishioners of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Church have reconstructed Father Baraga's simple school as the Assinins Baraga Center. There they have gathered some memorabilia and clippings about the church and the community to create a small museum. They hold the center open by appointment and during special events like the pow wow on the last weekend in July and Baraga Days. Then and at other times upon request they help research the ancestry of far-flung descendants of the area Ojibwa band, and of the orphans who lived here. To contact the Assinins Baraga Center, e-mail frbaraga@up,net or call (906) 353-6469 and ask for John Senior.
Today a clear path leads through the woods behind the school to the cemetery about a quarter-mile away. Here are hundreds and hundreds of burials without headstones, some orphans, many nuns, and others. One Holy Name parishioner on disability is using church and courthouse records and obituaries to discover and document the burials - an enormous task.
